A cybersecurity researcher recently ran an automated scan of 10,000 WordPress sites across different industries and countries. The results were striking but not surprising: 94% shared the same three vulnerabilities. Not complex, exotic weaknesses. Three basic, fixable, well-understood problems that most site owners simply haven't addressed.

These aren't theoretical risks. Each of these three vulnerabilities is actively exploited by automated attack tools every day. And each one can be closed — most in under an hour.

Summary

Three vulnerabilities appear in nearly every WordPress site: login security gaps, outdated software, and exposed entry points
Each vulnerability has a specific, actionable fix that doesn't require advanced technical knowledge
Closing all three eliminates the entry points used in over 80% of WordPress attacks
These fixes are necessary but not sufficient — ongoing monitoring is still required
A professional team can implement and maintain all three permanently

Vulnerability 1: The Unprotected Login Page

Every WordPress site has a login page. By default, it lives at /wp-login.php or /wp-admin. Every automated attack tool on the internet knows this. And most WordPress sites have no meaningful protection on this page.

Why It's Dangerous

Brute-force attacks — automated scripts that try thousands of username/password combinations — target WordPress login pages relentlessly. A typical unprotected WordPress site receives 50-200 brute-force login attempts per day. Some receive thousands.

Without protection, it's a matter of probability, not possibility. Given enough time and attempts, weak credentials will be guessed.

A fitness coaching business in Phoenix had their WordPress admin account compromised through a brute-force attack. The password was the business name followed by an exclamation mark. The attacker used the admin access to install a cryptocurrency miner that ran for three weeks, slowing the site to a crawl and increasing hosting costs by 400%.

How to Close It

Step 1: Enforce strong passwords. Every admin account needs a password that's at least 16 characters with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Use a password manager to generate and store them.

Step 2: Enable two-factor authentication (2FA). Even if a password is compromised, 2FA prevents access without the second factor. Plugins like WP 2FA or Google Authenticator make this straightforward.

Step 3: Implement login rate limiting. After 5 failed attempts, lock the IP address out for 30 minutes. This makes brute-force attacks impractical.

Step 4: Change the default admin username. If any account uses "admin" as a username, create a new administrator account with a unique name and delete the "admin" account.

Step 5: Disable XML-RPC if not needed. XML-RPC is an alternative login method that many attackers exploit. Unless you specifically need it (for the WordPress mobile app or Jetpack), disable it.

Time to implement: 30–45 minutes.

Vulnerability 2: Outdated Software Components

This is the single most exploited vulnerability in WordPress. According to security research, outdated plugins account for 52% of all WordPress hacks. Not zero-day attacks. Not sophisticated exploits. Just software that hasn't been updated.

Why It's Dangerous

When a plugin or theme developer discovers a security flaw and releases a patch, they also publish a description of what was fixed. This publication is essential for transparency — but it also gives attackers a precise roadmap for exploiting sites that haven't applied the update.

The window between a vulnerability being disclosed and automated exploits being deployed is shrinking. In some cases, it's less than 24 hours.

A boutique hotel in Charleston had 28 plugins installed. Twelve hadn't been updated in over six months. One of those twelve — an outdated booking calendar — had a publicly known SQL injection vulnerability. An automated scanner found the vulnerability on a Friday. By Sunday, the hotel's entire customer database had been copied: 3,800 names, emails, phone numbers, and booking histories.

How to Close It

Step 1: Audit your plugins right now. Go to your WordPress dashboard. List every plugin and theme. For each one, check:

When was it last updated by its developer?
Does it have a known vulnerability? (Check wpscan.com/plugins)
Is it actively maintained?

Step 2: Remove what you don't need. Every plugin is a potential entry point. If you're not actively using it, delete it. Not deactivate — delete. Deactivated plugins can still contain exploitable code.

Step 3: Update everything that remains. Apply all available updates. If you're not sure whether an update will break something, test it on a staging site first.

Step 4: Set up an update workflow. Updates shouldn't be a quarterly task. They should be applied within 48-72 hours of release, after testing. This is the single highest-impact security practice available.

Step 5: Replace abandoned plugins. If a plugin hasn't been updated by its developer in over a year, find an alternative. The developer has likely stopped monitoring for security issues.

Time to implement: 45–90 minutes for the initial audit. Ongoing: 15 minutes per week for maintenance.

Vulnerability 3: Exposed Server and Application Information

Most WordPress sites leak information that helps attackers plan their approach. This information disclosure doesn't directly enable an attack, but it dramatically reduces the effort required.

Why It's Dangerous

When an attacker can see your WordPress version, PHP version, server software, plugin list, and theme name, they don't need to guess. They look up known vulnerabilities for each specific version and target them precisely.

Think of it like a building with a sign on the front that lists every lock manufacturer and model number used inside. The locks themselves might be decent, but you've just told potential intruders exactly which tools to bring.

A nonprofit organization in Oregon had their WordPress version displayed in the page source code, their server version exposed in HTTP headers, and their complete plugin list visible through the REST API. An attacker used this information to identify that the site was running a specific outdated version of a contact form plugin with a known file upload vulnerability. The attack was surgical — no scanning required, no guessing, just a direct exploit using publicly available information the site had voluntarily exposed.

How to Close It

Step 1: Remove the WordPress version from your site. WordPress adds its version number to the HTML source and RSS feeds by default. Adding a simple function to your theme's functions.php file removes it:

remove_action('wp_head', 'wp_generator');

Step 2: Disable the REST API user enumeration. By default, anyone can visit /wp-json/wp/v2/users and see a list of your usernames. Disable this endpoint or restrict it to authenticated users only.

Step 3: Remove server information from HTTP headers. Configure your server to stop broadcasting its software version. In Apache, add ServerTokens Prod and ServerSignature Off to your configuration. In Nginx, add server_tokens off.

Step 4: Disable directory browsing. Without this, anyone can browse your file directories by navigating to folder URLs. Add Options -Indexes to your .htaccess file.

Step 5: Protect wp-config.php. This file contains your database credentials and security keys. Ensure it's not accessible via the web. Add rules to your .htaccess or server configuration to deny all web access to this file.

Time to implement: 20–30 minutes.

Why These Three Aren't Enough (But They're Essential)

Closing these three vulnerabilities will stop the majority of automated attacks targeting your site. That's significant — and it's worth doing today.

But it's not a complete security strategy. Here's what else you need:

Daily malware scanning to catch compromises that bypass preventive measures
File integrity monitoring to detect unauthorized changes
Uptime monitoring to know immediately when something goes wrong
Off-site daily backups to ensure you can recover from any incident
Ongoing professional oversight to adapt as new threats emerge

The three fixes in this article are the foundation. Comprehensive WordPress security builds on that foundation with layers of ongoing protection.

A 90-Minute Security Sprint

Here's how to close all three vulnerabilities this afternoon:

Time	Task
0–30 min	Login security: strong passwords, 2FA, rate limiting, disable XML-RPC
30–75 min	Plugin/theme audit: remove unused, update remaining, replace abandoned
75–90 min	Information exposure: remove version numbers, disable enumeration, protect config

After this 90-minute sprint, your site will be significantly harder to attack than 94% of WordPress installations. It's the highest-impact 90 minutes you can spend on your website this month.

For everything beyond these three fixes — the daily scanning, monitoring, backups, and ongoing management that complete the picture — that's where a dedicated team makes the difference. Our WordPress management and maintenance handles all of it, every day, so you never have to think about it again.
